As you may know, we’ve started up the first annual Investintech – CAJ Data Journalism scholarship, and we wanted to take a moment to focus on you, the student, who may be interested in applying.

The scholarship is aimed at helping students develop strong storytelling chops and the data skills to back it up, now a common expectation in the journalism industry. 

As a student, you can expect to come up against a number of challenges as you embark on your career, not only financially, but also technically.

Investintech Announces Launch Of Annual Data Journalism Scholarship

Due to the impact of COVID-19 on schools and students, we will be extending the scholarship deadline to May 1st, 2020. the free pass prize to the annual CAJ conference will not be offered this year as the conference for 2020 has been cancelled.There are currently no virtual conference alternatives or substitution prizes available.

If you’re a student who just started your major in journalism, or have already been doing journalistic work for a school paper, we’ve got some exciting news that you’ll enjoy.

We’re proud to announce today the launch of our new annual Investintech – CAJ Data Journalism Scholarship!

Partnering with the Canadian Association of Journalists (CAJ), a major journalism organization that supports and encourages excellence in journalism across Canada, our aim is to help the future generation of journalists like you.

We know that Able2Extract is being used by data journalists to extract PDF data into Excel spreadsheets for analysis. Their ultimate goal? To write news stories that are backed by accurate and credible data.

In this day and age of fake news, though, this level of credibility can be undermined. As such, there is a growing call for journalists to dig deeper into large amounts of digital data and analysis.

This takes skill training, time, and money–all of which can work against you as you continue to work and study your way into the industry.

A good journalist is a master storyteller. Telling compelling stories with data has become a new challenge and a growing trend in journalism today. The Internet has unlocked the world of information and made a huge amount of data available. Data journalists dig through all that data and transform it into valuable content.

There is a continuous and growing demand for data journalists, but many traditional journalists still shy away from it. Data journalism is kind of shrouded in mystery due to many myths about who can be a data journalist and which skills are required. We’ll delve into the most common myths about data journalism and unfold reality to help you better understand it and be less intimidated.

Myth #1: Data journalists must have a knack for math

“I am in journalism because I don’t have a knack for math” is the first thing most journalists and journalism students will say about data journalism. However, just because data-driven journalism involves numbers, it is not all about numbers. And it  certainly is not required that you be a math wizard to create stories with data.
