The times of getting excited after seeing you got one new message in your inbox are long gone. Nowadays, emails are deeply rooted in the modern business culture with a staggering number of <\/span>269 billion emails sent per day<\/span><\/a>. Yes, you read that right, billions. <\/span><\/p>\n

Gmail & Microsoft Outlook are arguably the most <\/span>common email clients used today. Although both services offer great features, it seems that Gmail <\/span>has <\/span>got<\/span>ten<\/span> the upper hand in<\/span>\u00a0recent years.<\/span><\/p>\n

Nowadays, many individuals and corporations are transitioning to Google\u2019s ecosystem to take full advantage of all the great apps and features <\/span>that come with a<\/span> Google account, and Gmail leads the pack.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Yet, making a switch to Gmail can be a hard pill to swallow for a long-time Outlook user. Getting accustomed to the default Gmail appearance after years of using Outlook where messages are arranged by date & time will take some effort.<\/span><\/p>\n

If you\u2019re a die-hard Outlook fan don\u2019t despair. There are ways to make the transition from Outlook to Gmail as seamless as possible. We\u2019re going to show you a neat trick on how to make your inbox work exactly the way you want it to by making Gmail look like Outlook<\/em><\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Enable Preview Pane <\/b><\/h2>\n

The first step is to enable the preview pane in the Gmail settings. The Preview Pane lab will make your Gmail inbox mirror the default Outlook appearance. <\/span><\/p>\n

Here is how to enable it:<\/span><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Open <\/span>Settings<\/b> and select the <\/span>Labs<\/b> tab at the top<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Search for Preview and the <\/span>Preview Pane<\/b> lab will appear<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Check the <\/span>Enable<\/b> box & click on <\/span>Save<\/b> changes<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    The Preview Pane is now enabled in your Gmail inbox. After you return to your inbox, a <\/span>Split Pane<\/b> button can be seen at the top. You now need to select the <\/span>Vertical Split<\/b> option from the drop-down menu. <\/span><\/p>\n

    Now, your inbox should match the Outlook style you\u2019re used to. Click on any email in the list and you\u2019ll see it previewed just like in Outlook. <\/span><\/p>\n

    Bonus Tip 1<\/b>: <\/span>By default, messages in the Preview Pane are marked as read after a 3-second delay. You can change or remove the delay in the general sections under Preview Pane options. <\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

    Disable Conversation View<\/b><\/h2>\n

    Gmail groups messages together based on the subject line. The new Outlook has a similar view, but most of the users opt to have each message as a separate conversation. <\/span><\/p>\n

    If you\u2019re one of those, here is how to turn of the conversation view:<\/span><\/p>\n

    1. Go to <\/span>Settings<\/b><\/li>\n
    2. Scroll down to the <\/span>Conversation View<\/b> and check <\/span>Conversation view off<\/b><\/li>\n
    3. Click on <\/span>Save<\/b> changes <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      Enable Google Calendar Gadget<\/b><\/h2>\n

      One last thing <\/span>to adjust<\/span> before your Gmail inbox <\/span>starts <\/span>look<\/span>ing<\/span> identical to Outlook is to enable the Google Calendar Gadget. <\/span><\/p>\n

      Follow these instructions:<\/span><\/p>\n

      1. Open <\/span>Settings<\/b> and navigate to the <\/span>Labs<\/b> tab<\/span><\/li>\n
      2. Search for <\/span>Calendar<\/b> and the <\/span>Google Calendar gadget<\/b> will appear<\/span><\/li>\n
      3. Enable<\/b> it and <\/span>Save<\/b> changes <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        There you have it! With just a few clicks you\u2019ve managed to tweak your Gmail inbox to look and work like Outlook. <\/span><\/p>\n

        Bonus Tip 2<\/b>: <\/span>If you want to revert back to the default Gmail look go <\/span><\/i>Settings>Labs>Disable Preview Pane>Save changes<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n
