And because of this, it\u2019s only natural to think that along with calculations comes precision and accuracy. The program is set to do all the complex analysis for you. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet from time to time, errors do shockingly happen. \u00a0This is scary especially when big data analysis in Excel is gaining traction. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It can be hard to believe that a program like Excel could be at the heart of major financial debacles, but it has happened and it has happened in the past more times than you\u2019d think. <\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Spreadsheet Flaws Throughout The Years<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1 <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2013\/04\/19\/opinion\/krugman-the-excel-depression.html?mcubz=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Reinhart-Rogoff Paper (2010)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2010, Harvard economists, Carmen Reinhart and Kenneth Rogoff, published \u201c<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.nber.org\/papers\/w15639.pdf?new_window=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Growth in a Time of Debt<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d a paper that claimed to have identified a tipping point for government debt and its relationship to economic growth. This paper gave the government a reason to cut spending even if it meant mass unemployment. Yet, \u00a0researchers couldn\u2019t replicate the results and it was later found that there was a coding error in Excel which, even when corrected, <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.oecd-ilibrary.org\/economics\/public-debt-economic-growth-and-nonlinear-effects_5k918xk8d4zn-en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" class=\"broken_link\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">didn\u2019t prove the claim<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>2 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/excel-partly-to-blame-for-trading-loss-2013-2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">JP Morgan Trading Losses (2012)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When big financial investments are involved, there is always the potential for error as was shown when JP Morgan suffered huge losses on an account. Investigations concluded that <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/jpmorgan-var\/value-at-risk-model-masked-jp-morgan-2-bln-loss-idUSL1E8GBKS920120511\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a number of factors led to the loss<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including miscalculations on Value-at-Risk models that involved copying and pasting data between Excel spreadsheets.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-7531 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/www.investintech.com\/resources\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/excel-error.png\" alt=\"Spreadsheet flaws\" width=\"188\" height=\"239\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.investintech.com\/resources\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/excel-error.png 794w, https:\/\/www.investintech.com\/resources\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/excel-error-236x300.png 236w, https:\/\/www.investintech.com\/resources\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/10\/excel-error-768x975.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 188px) 100vw, 188px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>3 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/2008\/10\/barclays-excel-error-results-in-lehman-chaos\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Barclay\u2019s Lehman Brothers Asset Acquisition (2008)<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The error here occurred when two lawyers working for Lehman Brothers were reformatting a spreadsheet. During the process, a column of 179 contracts for trading positio<\/span>ns that were never meant to be purchased was hidden and included in the reformatted spreadsheet. When Barclay\u2019s filed the document, the hidden column, along with the extra contracts and positions, was processed.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theregister.co.uk\/2003\/06\/19\/excel_snafu_costs_firm_24m\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TransAlta $24 Million Purchase (2003)<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">T<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he spreadsheet mistake here was also due to a copy-paste error. TransAtla, a Canadian power generator, wound<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0up buying more US power transmission hedging contracts at higher prices than intended. The oversight resulted in a cost of $24 million USD for the company.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Is There A Solution?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, nothing can guarantee that Excel errors won\u2019t happen again. If the above examples teach us anything it\u2019s that doing your due diligence is just as important as your skillsets. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It means <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/Detect-errors-in-formulas-3a8acca5-1d61-4702-80e0-99a36a2822c1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">checking formulas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.officetooltips.com\/excel_2016\/tips\/check_data_entry_for_invalid_entries.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">validating your data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It means double checking your results, and in the above cases, formatting spreadsheets with care, displaying all rows and columns, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.office.com\/en-us\/article\/Find-and-remove-duplicates-00E35BEA-B46A-4D5D-B28E-66A552DC138D\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deleting duplicate data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Proper Excel training is becoming more crucial for high-impact decisions and corporate transactions. To help in this cause, there\u2019s the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.eusprig.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">European Spreadsheet Risks Interest Group<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (EuSpRiG). EuSpRIG is the primary source for information on practical methods and processes on how companies can use Excel properly to \u201cinventory, test, correct, document, backup, archive, compare and control the legions of spreadsheets that support critical corporate infrastructure.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But is it enough?
